目前分布于我国的四个老虎亚种（东北虎、华南虎、孟加拉虎和印支虎）中，惟有华南虎是中国独有的。19世纪以前，华南虎曾经广泛分布于以我国东南部为主的.国内广大地区。20世纪后，由于自然环境变迁、战乱纷扰及人类活动影响等多方面的原因，华南虎的分布区域不断受到挤压，分布地域面积逐渐缩校直至上个世纪80年代以前，由于捕猎和砍伐森林等活动，使华南虎赖以生存的栖息地受到破坏，华南虎的数量急剧减少。
据以往调查估算，目前中国处于野生状态的华南虎仅有20至30只，养殖在中国动物园里的数量也仅有60只，这仪数量比大熊猫还要稀少。在最近的一次野外考察中，甚至没有发现活的野生华南虎个体，华南虎已接近物种灭绝的边缘。
国家林业局全国野生动植物研究与发展中心的副研究员陆军介绍说，由于动物园中的数量有限，用于繁衍的华南虎之间的血缘关系越来越亲近，目前有的新产虎崽已经开始出现短尾的现象。毫无疑问，如果任由这一趋势发展下去，在不久的将来，这一世界最濒危动物将不复存在。
